Gas Tank Pressure Leak (I think)

Brand new to this. Just bought a used 1992 Maxum 1700/XR with a 60HP Merc. Boat and motor runs great minus a few fixes I need to work on (gas guage and odometer don't work). Anyway, the fuel tank leaks out the tank vent in the back. Very slow drip, but I figured with it sitting in the garage on a hot day pressure builds up and that can happen - so I loosened the tank cap figuring that would help with any pressure issues. That did stop it but after the last time I had it out, I did the same thing - but then found the gas level in the tank rose enough to start trickling out the top. Sealed that up and now back to the vent slow leak.

From looking around there are quite a few knowledgable folks on here. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Re: Gas Tank Pressure Leak (I think)

I would post this in general boating question as it could happen to any boat. Also please read the top Sticky

Sounds liek you have a clogged check valve. i had a jet ski that did the same thing. Ended up being the one way check valve went bad and started to check but the other way and was collapsing the tank. Sounds like yours is doing the opposite and the gas pressure builds till it starts to come out of the overflow
