Re: Gas Tank size '84 278 XLC Chaparal

My! - My! - My! Another boater with twin 1.6L SeaDrives. Mine are 87s & on a 23' Wellcraft CC. My tank has a data plate right near the sending unit and filler on the top of the tank. On mine ther is a 6" access port in the floor.

For most boats I would suggest taking along a 6 gal portable and when you run out on the main switch to the portable and fill the main. If your SeaDrives are mounted like mine you cannot do that as you do not have a quick disconnect fuel line though you could rig one by your gas filter.

My rig takes 122 gallons but I do not like to carry that much weight. I run it down to a 1/4 and put in 50 gal & a gal of oil.

So Little,

Thanks for the info I'll look for a plate.

We've swapped notes on our beloved Sea Drives on a few other posts in the outboard section. Are you still running good this year?

I'll be breaking in a reman'd powerhead soon and need the tank mix @ 50:1, in combo with the VRO, to get the 25:1 for the break in. Foolish or not I plan to rely on VRO after break in!?

My tanks is already full, but wasn't sure of tank size to calculate oil needed.

As it turns out I found a listing for a 278 XLC Chaparral in the iboats classifieds, which indicated fuel capacity @ 120 gallons. Good thing, because previous owner told us it was 100 gallons. I knew it was more because we've put over 100 gallons in!

Coincidence or not, about the same size as your Wellcraft, is this a typical size for an inboard tank on that size boat? My Chap is 26'6 with approx an 8' beam.

I plan to now dump in 2.2 gallons of oil.

R. Wood
