Hello all..
Just a quick question at the risk of sounding reeealy dumb :) I have an older johnson 6 horse that runs great seemingly, but my question is how does the gas tank vent? It stalled out on me last week, and the cap has 3 positions.. tight, loose, and off. Does the cap need to be loose to vent?.. if so, that would explain the stalling. Tried again today, and she fired right up. thanx

Should have a little screw on the top you loosen. If the tank is not vented the motor will keep stalling

The screw for my tank is in the middle of the gauge. Have you tried that?

It depends how old your motor is.

If it is from mid sixties or older, it will have a double hose fuel line. The engine pumps air into the tank to pressurize it, forcing the gas up to the engine. A tank like this has no vent, and must remain closed so the pressure can build up.

If you have one of these tanks, do not get rid of it, no one makes them anymore.

Re: gas tank vent..

The line from tank to motor has only one hose, and the bulb. It is from 1968, and the tank is in great shape. I believe my brother has a similar tank, but much, much newer. He doesn't vent his, but the way the motor stalled on me, and smelled "gassy" I thought it was an easy answer. so.. anytone with a tank that has these 3 positions should open to the loose position?.. or not..?.. thanx
