Gas Tank Ventilation

I'm restoring a 25' Blackfin Combi. I am currently installing two new 61 gallon tanks. The tanks were built accoding to blueprints of the boat, but I did not see the original tanks that came out of the boat because I boat her as a "project" boat. It seems to me that the tanks would need some sort of ventilation, but the only things attached to the tanks are a fill port, a fuel line attachment, and a float for the fuel gauge. Is the gas cap alone an adequate source of ventilation or is there something that I'm overlooking? <br />Thanks in advance. You guys were a big help with my previous post concerning her electrical system.

Re: Gas Tank Ventilation

Most tanks have a separate vent line that dumps fuel overboard if you overfill and allows air into the tank as the fuel level goes down. Without this type of vent, you will suffer from fuel starvation as the level decreases. However, having said all that, there are fuel caps that have vents in them (as used on small kickers), even so I suggest you talk to the tank manufacturer before installing the new tanks... it may save you some grief later on.
