Gas tank

Hi all,

I recently had an issue where gas leaked all over my boat while sitting in my garage last fall. It turns out my metal (steel?) gas tank developed some sort of leak.I was wondering if you could give me some recommendations on what type of tank I should look to buy? My boat is a sterncraft (tri-hull) outboard. My gas tank was 12 gallons.

I don't want anything fancy. Just something that does the trick. Also, do gas tanks come with sending units? I have zero mechanical abilities, but I was told I would need a sending unit to hook this up and get my gas gauge to work? Any insights, tips, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Corey

Hi Scott - mine was a below deck one. Sorry, I didn't know the difference until some additional time on the internet after I posted.

Looks like they are pretty pricey.

Yes the cost is up there, can go plastic or aluminum. A custom model cost more then if you can find one which will be close enough. Will need to get your tank out and after measuring have a look around

There are a few surplus stores that advertise on ebay. Thy may have a new old stock poly tank that may work

I would recommend getting a poly tank. They meet all the USCG standards and don't corrode. Yes the tank will need a sending unit. They are available right here on iboats, (as are the tanks) but to buy one you need to decide on a tank first. The length of the sending unit depends on the depth of the tank. Building a custom tank is pricey and you can't be sure it meets legal requirements. Just buy one that is approximately the same size and shape of yours.
