Re: Gas...

its about time, might mean that world demand is increasing, and hence economic improvement on the way.

And -- 2+ years ago I bought my truck when gas was $4, got a great deal on the truck.

Found another one, same year, but more miles, 2+ years later, and they want $3000 more than I paid.

If gas prices go up, I might get a better price on the truck.

Here in Gainesville, GA, (40 miles northeast of Atlanta) around Lake S. Lanier, it's at 2.87. Reports say will drop back a bit after Holidays, but back up and go higher by Spring and Summer season. Don't have a clue what it will be out here on the lake. Convenience typically is 15-20% more. Killer for the wallet!!

Just head across the border to Canada. $4.20 American dollars will get you 1 US gallon in Southern Ontario...........Do you feel better now?:(

I'm considering selling the Expedition now...before gas prices go up, then buying a different one in the spring when gas goes up and SUV prices plummet again. Probably will make a 3-4K difference. I'd say there is little doubt gas will go up next summer.

Re: Gas...

I believe the ultimate demand we place on the resource determines it's cost. However, the speculators in products will try to manipulate the prices to keep it high.

My unscientific take on this is that the speculators try to artifically push up the price of gas, starting in March, when demand is low. They try to hold the price until Memorial Day, hoping the demand will kick in. If demand doesn't support the price, the price will drop, and the speculators will try to prop it up just before 4 July, in an attempt to achieve higher prices for the balance of the summer.

Just my perception, not an analysis.

Re: Gas...

We're right around $2.89. They're blaming the current prices in part on the skirmish in Korea.
Gas prices aren't always determined strictly by supply and demand- both crude oil and galoline futures trade as commodities. Currently the commodity price for a gallon of gasoline is around $2.35- add in about another $0.50 per gallon for costs to get to retail, and there you have it.
Oil has been trading on an upward trend- that tends to pull up gas prices eventually.
Nobody really knows what the summer will bring yet. Depends on how robust worldwide demand is and what the dollar is doing relative to other currencies. When the dollar drops, speculators dump money into oil futures as a hedge, and the trading demand drives the price up.
Very complicated and impossible to predict.

here's part that's not complicated: when there's bad news that drives prices up, the reaction at the pump is immediate and severe. But when the bad news is resolved, or there is good news, the prices are slow to creep back down.

Just a Modulational-Observational-Informational . . . I am watching this one as fuel price threads tend to end up politically charged. So far so good, but the up and down pricing thing and the difference in the speeds between the two movements is one of the triggers for WW3, please help us keep this one off the scrap heap. It's really tall, and I don't want to climb up there to discard it :)

Gas is $2.80 something around here. It nearly got to $3/gallon earlier this week. If gas is going to get real high, I'd rather it do it now than in the summer.

Of course there are some good points to higher gas prices... the boat ramp isn't nearly as busy and the beaches are much quieter. :D
