gasket for 2 cycle oil tank

I have a 1995 Mercury 125 HP with an oil tank that apparently only lasted a couple of years because it leaks badly when tilted up for trailering. It does not have the screw on round lid like most but a rectangular lid that clips closed. I bought a new gasket but the old one was glued on, do I need to glue this one on and if so what kind of adhesive?<br /><br />Mdog
