I am completing the replacement of my thermostat today, as well as inspecting and cleaning out the carbs.

I have all 3 new gaskets, and wondered if gasket sealant is needed for any of these?

1. Thermostat
2. Air filter box
3. Carb cover? Not sure what this is called.

This is an '89 Johnson 70.

Thanks,

Chris

U mean the red silicone (rtv)?..u don't need it and in most cases shouldn't use it...if one of the surfaces of what ever you were putting togeather was messed up ( dinged, dented, gouged) and the gasket wouldn't seal proper and u were just trying to get by b4 u could fix it the right way then you could use that stuff but other than that u realy don't need it

Yeah, similar to the red stuff. I actually bought the Evinrude/Johnson stuff called Gasket Sealant, I think it's black.

On the thermostat, it was so baked on there, I couldn't tell if there had been sealant before or not.

I will just give it a go without the sealant, and see what happens.
