Gasket sealer on fuel pump gasket?

When I removed my mechanical fuel pump on my 01 200xl (carb) engine, it essentially fell off as soon as I removed the bolts. The first time I removed it a few years ago, I remember having to tap it a few times with a screwdriver handle to get it to release. When I reinstall, should I use gasket sealer? I have a can of the Johnson/Evinrude Powerhead gasket sealing compound. I am wondering if part of my problem was that I did not have a tight seal to the block.

Since block suction operates the pump you have a valid point. I have usually always used a cement of the appropriate nature for all interfacing of things with a gasket type sealing mechanism,...Orings excluded, if I had any doubt as to the quality of the seal, especially when working on older equipment, especially where corrosion could impede "the factory's idea of) a quality seal.

Only place (that I can recall) I didn't was on carburetor bowl gaskets as they were of the nature that I felt I could get a reliable seal. My lists of adding sealant includes thermostat gaskets and head gaskets on gas and diesel cars and trucks, automatic transmission pans (one side), and such.

I spoke for what I do. Others will speak for themselves. You asked, I replied.

I have been trying to determine if the J/E sealant is fuel resistant or not. No luck so far. That is why I hesitate to use it between the pump components. I feel like the gasket between the pump and block is pretty safe, though, as I would not think it would see any fuel.

Ok, last night I installed the rebuilt fuel pump and tested it this morning. Idled great. No more air in the lines. Ran it but could only get 4,000 rpm at WOT and it was kind of stumbling at WOT. I never verified timing under load while doing the link and sink so maybe it just needs to be tuned a bit? I’m counting it as a partial win.
