I have a water removal unit that is about the size and look of an auto oil filter. Does this need maintenance? I don't know how long it has been on the boat, it's an '88 Starcraft 16' with onboard 16 gal (I believe) tank. I just today decided to disable the VRO so I have emptied and "flushed out" the tank and lines with pre-mixed fuel.

yes it needs to be changed at least once per season. just like the fuel filter in the car.
Its what keeps any water out of your engine. And filters the fuel.

Water seperators work on gravity. The fuel+water enters the bottom of the tank, and the fuel is drawn off the top of the seperator. When you change it, dump the contents int a clear container and see if there is any water or rust in the fuel.
