I'm a new boater, so I'm sure there are others that will give some better advice. But, I recently did some gauge work on my first boat. I installed a tach, which wasn't working after the installation. I pulled the harness connector and tested each lead with my voltmeter. I had power in all the right places at the harness (which connects at control box). So then I moved down the circuit and tested all the terminals on the gauges. It turned out my trim gauge was grounding. Disconnected trim gauge and all is well.
My suggestion is to grab a voltmeter and start testing your wiring at various points in the circuit.
