I have a 1969 6hp Johnson. Started to replace waterpump. Made a mistake by opening the gear case. Got the waterpump in and gearcase back together, however now when I move the lower section of the shifter in the three positions. On Number one position, I don't get any gear. In number 2 position, I get neutral and number three I get it in the other gear. What I have done wrong??

The coupler to the lower shift rod is probably not holding. Drop the lower unit down a bit and check to make sure that the coupler is able to lift the shift rod up.

There is a shifter lever in the gearcase which swivels on a pivot pin. The pivot pin is screwed in from outside near the top of the skeg. If it is removed and not put back through the hole in the shifter lever, you could also get a similar problem.

I will try to find a diagram on line so that you can see the parts and get back to you in a minute.

The shifter cradle has disengaged the shift fork, or the pivot for the fork isn't in the hole. You'll need to take the bottom cap back off. I like to do this job with the gearcase upside down. Then, gravity is your friend. The parts will stay put as you reassemble rather than falling all over the place. With the cap off, arrange things and put the cap back on. It's Real frustrating if you do it with the gearcase upright, but it can be done. Upside down is way easier.

You can look at parts catalogs on the Johnson website. Google "johnson outboards". A few clicks and you'll be able to access your model. The blown-up diagram may be helpful.

Thanks fellows for the input. I'll have to take the cap back off and see what the problem is.

I forgot to install the sleeve which rides on the gear shaft. The shifter forks ride on it. Once I got this right, I finally got the whole setup right after several tries.
