Probably get a better response if you share what your engine/gear case is or is not now doing.

The gear box works great on reverse but the first time out in the forward gear it would slip out of gear. After 4 cable adjustments and the last time out the boat would travel a short ditance before it would slip out of gear. I was out a ways and had the neighborhood kids with me so I held it in gear. I could feel the motor slip in and out of gear . The more throttle I gave it the worse it would slip...I was told the clutch dog is out but have no idea if i should rebuild or but a new motor any ideas would be great..

If it were me I'd probably be checking e-bay for another lower unit. Sounds to me like the ears on the shift dog and forward are worn and rounded on the edges. As for rebuilding... you can probably buy another motor for what it would cost you to have that one fixed.

I was told that there was an adjustment ,possible a upper and lower adjustment that would allow me to possible curtail replacing the gears and or clutch dogs,,I again turn to the wise and knowlegable man of the boat forum for advise and if possible the price for the dogs and forward gear....

David, you're in for at least a clutch dog and forward gear, and as long as it's apart probably new seals (prop shaft and drive shaft). I would guess parts are $125 to $175 plus labor. Labor is probably 2.5 hours, say another $175. While you're at might as well change the water pump impeller for another $25.
Talk to your dealer for local rates.

I know this wont be a popular reply, BUT

I had an old evinrude 18 HP years ago, it was an early 60s model I think ( red white and blue hood looked like a squished teardrop sort of)

any way, it was slipping in forward also under load, but NOT in reverse. it would knock or bang, when it slipped, I thought it was an ignition miss at first.

the part was about $60 , the clutch dog thing
I had about $110 in the boat, motor, trailer combo..

I took it apart, flipped that clutch dog around, and it ran for a few more years perfect in forward, but would slip in reverse if you gave it alot of throttle, which I rarely did it was a tiller steer

just an idea if your as cheap and broke as I was ( still am )

also knowing what I know now, I probably would have TIG welded that littel ear and remachined its edges square with a hand grinder...

good bit of bush mechanics that ozarkjeep keep it running / keep it cheap i like that . another trick i have used on an evinrude is to use high temp fuel hose as water flow restrictors down the sides of the water jacket . much cheaper & work just as well perhaps we could start a new page called ( they told me it would never work )
