The gear box on my 1994 175Hp Mercury just died. I was running about 4200rpm when I heard the sound of gears grinding together. I stop and afterwards I couldn't put the boat in gear. I can put it in reverse though.
I recently changed the oil pump in the lower unit. Could I have not put he lower unit on correctly to cause such a mess.
Luckily I had another lower unit, which I have put on and all is well. I'm concerned it may happen again if I'm doing something wrong in putting the lower unit on.
After I replaced the water pump, the took the boat out a few times and ran it hard without and issue, so it I did do something wrong, it didn't happen right of way.
Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. thanks.
