gear case problem was running at abt. 3500 rms bumped it to WOT motor raced no gears?

History 1989 110 johnson paired with 1987 90hp lower unit. I have been out about 20 times everything has been good. Today going up river I was at around 3000-3500 rmps slowley pushed the hammer down then motor raced to around 6000 rpms pulled it back right away. tryed forward and reverse nothing. Before I could here it going into gear now nothing. Could it be the cluch dog or does anyone enlse have any experience with this. How hard are the repairs and how costly. I do my own work. Also I am holdng a 1987 OMC shop manual for thatr motor.

Try to switch gears manualy first!. Do you feel the detent? If yes, yer going to have to go in deeper! No worries, not as hard as you mite think! post results!

Any chance that the rubber shock hub inside the propeller finally quit? Try another prop. Usually when that hub goes, it is not as abrupt/quick as what you describe. If you don't sense anything from the test that Monte suggests, I'd pull the lower drain plug. See if the magnetic tip of that lower drain plug has any large chunks of metal on it. Drain and visually check the lower unit oil for metallic shavings.

May have broke a drive shaft.

Thanks guys, I just took a quick look at lunch and with motor in neutral I can spin the prop and no noise. then put it in gear and spin the prop and here clicking like gear teeth not hooking up.
After work I be able to look at the oil and drop the lower unit. Is it cheaper to fix or just find a low cost used one?? From what I have read 1978-1991 will fit the 1989 johnson 110 v4. does that sound about right?

I'd probably diagnose what is wrong and get an estimate of actual repair to your existing lower. Then decide what you want to do. Purchaseing a used lower may bring on it's own (new) problems-unless you know the seller-so factor that into your purchase decision.
