:confused:ok all I have my 90HP force L drive. I know all the hype about these being crappy units but I am not giving up on this just yet. last time I was out on the lake my shift pivot pin at the bottom of the gear case broke. I have the new part however I can not get the shifter to hook into the yoke without taking everything apart. So I started pulling the gear case apart. Pulled the prop off no problem and then started pulling the retaining nut. This is an inverted nut and in order to get it out I had to drill and chisel it and brake it into 5-6 pieces to get it out. then went into pulling the SPOOL, PROPELLER SHAFT W/BEARING AND SEALS and I got it to move about 1.4in and then it broke into about 5-6 pieces also. Is there something special I need to do to get this out. And when I put it back together is there something I can do to keep if from freezing in like this one is? Or do you think it would be cheaper to just buy a used Gear Case and rebuild the old one at my liesure?

Re: Gear case Questions

You didn't mention what year it was, but from the description of the parts that you removed it sounds like you probably have a 1991 L-Drive. Replacement parts are available. I would think that replacement parts are cheaper than a complete used unit, unless you broke the spool itself.

As far as preventing from seizing, the only thing you can do is to coat the seals around the spool with some anti-seize. There is probably a special spool puller to get it out. A frozen spool is a common problem.

Here is a site that lists the parts. I would call them first because other sites list the parts as "no longer available".

Re: Gear case Questions

Yes it is a 90/91 L-drive and yes the spool is broken I bought a puller from Sears and modified it to fit into the case and reach where it needed to but all the points it gives me to grab broke out as soon as it started moving. I found a Used gear case that is just missing the impeller housing (which I have) and the guy wants 450.00 for it +shipping. Just the spool and seals alone is 150.00. I also put a small chip in the case however where this is it will NOT affect the operation of the unit. I am just afraid that if I keep tearing into this unit I am going to end up spending over 450.00.

I got the boat for 1700.00 and so far have put about 500.00 into it. It books at about 2600 in fair shape. Other than the gear case the only other thing wrong is the back engine cover is cracked up and needs new vinyl. Everthing else is great. The engine runs Perfect and the gel-coat is in great shape (a little fadded but normal for age) and the floor has no soft spots. You all think it is worth replacing the lower unit for 450.00?
