GEAR CHANGE JUST A QUICKY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a quicky to anyone who would know?.<br />I made a stupid error and turned the gear change rod by hand when i changed water impropella.Iam putting the lower unit back on tommorow. Now am i right in thinking if i turn the gear change rod so that it (i beleive) gets tight and in nuetral,then put the gear change handle into nuetral it should then be able to change foward and back??<br />help apreciated<br />HELLO FROM LONDON ENGLAND

Hi<br />Its a 50 hp 4 cyl but the year im not sure of.<br />They couldn't find it by the serial no when i was getting parts, but they think its quite old.The serial no starts with 185.<br />I think i found the answer though,am i right in putting the gearshift in forward and turning the gear rod all the way counter clockwise?????
