I have some work to do in my lower unit and am temporarily stopped by the gear housing nut. I have read that breaking the nut (made of Nylon) is one option. The Mercury tool part # 91 91947 is a bit expensive. I have no problem breaking it out as it is only a $10.00 part but then of course would like to properly tighten the new one. I made a tool for the job which on preliminary testing was not cooperating. Is there another common spanner wrench or automobile tool which may or will work in lieu of the Mercury $ 140.00 nut remover.? Another question . Is this tool compatible with multiple lower units of differing sizes and years or of limited use to only the 35 to 50 or so HP's?. I have needed the tool in the past, and may or may not need it in the future depending on its compatibility with other uses. I dont mind spending money on tools I need I just dont want to spend it on one job, not for this price anyway. MOD EDIT Thanks.

This is what I came up with. Once I added the aluminum tube to hold the thing inplace it worked great. Part # 91- 00001 by Gerry Rygz
