I have gotten conflicting reports from people and I just wanted to drop in to ask if it is appropriate to use OMC type C lubricant which is what is in my owner's manual for replacing the oil on a 1969 Evinrude 18 HP Fastwin? I have heard that I can use SAE 90 and I had someone else who I consider to be knowledgeable say that I should only use 80/90wt and that Type C is only for electric shift. I just want to change my oil, I'll get whatever I need. Can someone just point me on the right direction? I assume Type C is fine, correct?

In the 1960's and early 1970's all the OMC motors used type -C gear oil.-----Then HI-VIS came out and type -C was only specified for electric shift.

Thank you for that. So if I already have the Type C oil, should I use it or would I be better off buying 80/90w?

You want lower unit gear lube.. has additives to keep water in suspension..
