So I go to clean out the garage today and in the spring boat box full of leftover stuff boat wise I find 2 empty bottles of Mercruiser OUTBOARD gear lube. Unfortunately I have a 1975 Mercruiser inline 6 165hp with MC-1 outdrive. Most of picked the wrong bottles off the shelf-idiot. So I am going to pull the boat from the water today and will drain and put in outdrive gear lube. Just worried about how much damage I might have done-only ran motor an hour or so at most but...full panic mode now. How bad did I screw up? Everything working fine last time out but...

Re: Gear Lube Mistake

Was that OEM or some aftermarket oil? Don't remember Merc actually having a separate outboard and IO gear lube.

I doubt you did any damage since it's called gear lube, iIf it is Merc, it's probably just the premium gear lube, not the Hi Performance. Just drain it out and change it if you want.

Was it truly gear lube or the outboard oil you mix with the gas? If it was gear lube you should be fine.

It will be fine. You could just run that and be fine.

That's what was used in 75 before Hi-Performance. Go boating, change to what you want the next time you change your gear lube.
