Gear Lube or 2 Stroke Mix?

It's a new lower unit. Saw this leak. Pulled lower plug on lower and did not observe any water come out. This fluid looks and smells identical to the lower lube, and it looks and smells identical to the Yamalube 2 stroke fuel mix as well. I have heard that the excess, unburned fuel mix can exit this hole. Is that a true statement? What can I do to rule out one or the other?

I might as well add that it is a 1998 Yamaha Vmax 150 outboard 2 stroke. If it helps to know additional.....It's a white and green Skeeter pulled by an '03 4x4 Dodge Ram 2500 4 door 24 valve Cummins Turbo...Just sayin'.....LOL... All in fun, but I would appreciate any input.

odd place for a lower unit leak...could be 2 stroke oil that ran down from up above

not normal. if that is gear oil leaking, there must be a seal leak.
i beleive that's where the speedometer get's it's water pressure. the rubber tubing is external after it leaves the lower unit to the speedometer so it would be difficult for pre-mix to get in that tubing.
unless, the tubing is not present and the gear oil has leaked past the drive shaft / or shift shaft and filled that area with oil and it's leaking through that hole

trying to help

If you had a 3500 Mega Cab, we might be able to help. :)

I'm not familiar with a Vmax, but does it have an two stroke oil tank sitting up above the dripping oil? That oil is too fresh looking to be lower unit gear oil and looks more like brand new oil. It isn't unburned, excess two stroke oil. What color oil do you use.

Looks like the YamaLube to me. It could be running down the shift shaft and coming out of that hole.

Just my 2 cents... the gearcase is sealed. It has 3 locations where it is sealed against leaking and it can be pressure tested. In other words, it should not be leaking at all. It may be that because this is a new LU, it was refurbished, at which time excess gearcase oil found its way into the LU and is leaking out. If I were you, I would rule out a gearcase leak by looking up the pressure rating for your particular gearcase and testing that it can hold that pressure by using compressed air and a pressure gauge. If it holds the pressure, then don't worry about the leak. If it does not hold the pressure, then you most likely have a leaky oil seal. You could also have a crack somewhere, but let's hope it's just a bad seal. The 3 locations of the gearcase that have oil seals are the driveshaft, shift rod and propshaft. The propshaft seal can be accessed by simply removing the prop. The other two require dropping the LU. If your gearcase does not hold the recommended amount of pressure, then I would guess that either your shift rod or driveshaft seal is shot. This would explain how gearcase lube could have leaked into the body of the LU and is leaking out of that hole. I find it hard to believe that unburnt oil could make its way to that hole, but I could be wrong.

That is a water drain for the gearhousing that prevents water from standing in the cavities. For gear oil to leak out from either the shift shaft or drive shaft means it was either over filled or water leaked in and floated the oil up. Yamalube TCWIII is more blue than green. Synthetic gear lube is green.

Haven't touched the lower unit, other than checking the lube to see if water has mixed. Still looks good, but still getting the leak from weep hole after boating. Well, the boat has been sitting in the shed for about two or three months now. I pulled it from the shed, yesterday on Nov 30, and put the ears and hose to it. I started it up and let it run for about 10 minutes or so. I never engaged the gears... so nothing would be moving or pressured in the lower unit correct? . When I shut the motor off, I noticed the fluid was coming out of the weep hole. Would that lead any of you to believe it's not lower unit fluid, and simply the two stroke mix like some say it is?

On a 2 strokes you will find some unburned fuel/oil mix residue draining down through prop or tail's small drain holes, specially when too much boating at idle speed, when engine is undergoing it's break in preocess, or too much oli has been added, it's quite normal. If it has an odor and sticky whem being rubbed against finger, it's definitely 2 strokes...

Happy Boating

drop lower unit look to see if you can tell where it is coming from.
If you still cannot tell ,clean everything up well, put back together
run it and take back apart again
If it is 2 stroke oil you will see clean oil coming down the shaft maybe from oil pump

If lower unit oil it should be coming out of shaft seal on lower unit
