Re: gear lube

For an article on gear lube testing, get the December '08 Bass and Walleye Boats Magazine. Some of the best known brands don't do as well as you think they would.

definetly refill it, those gears are just iron, if you leave it exposed to air you give it the opportunity to rust.

Re: gear lube

It depends on how good the oil was, when you drained it. If the oil had no water in it, then you can get by with draining it and refilling it in the spring. If it drained with a milky look, then you better flush it out real good and refill it with good oil.

Re: gear lube

If you are going to drain it for the winter and fill it in the spring, here's what I would do. Hang a BIG tag on the front of the motor saying "NO OIL IN LOWER UNIT".

Amen to Don Hansen's suggestion. I can see no reason to wait until the spring unless you think the price of oil is going to continue it's downward trend. LOL Are there specific reasons to wait? Rick.

I'd go a step further....take the prop off and then hang the tag on the bare prop shaft.
It is SOOOOO easy to plan to complete a job in the spring and then get "spring fever" and try to get back on the water ASAP so some things get forgotten.

On the other hand, filling the lower unit now costs little, and if you want, you can still change again in the spring.

Re: gear lube

whats all this talk about puttin it up for the winter?

we do a lot of fishing during the winter in oklahoma, especially catfish, ive even had to break ice around the ramp to get the boat in the water a few times...........you just dont go as fast and you sure dont want top fall in.

as far as leaving it empty DONT. its a costly mistake if some thing happens and you forget and your sign disappears........it mysteriously disappeared is how the story would go around my house.

For all who think it's alright to leave it empty and rely on memory check this one out. "Boy, did I pull a dumb one!" Rick.
