Gear noise when engaged, help.

This is a new post since "Force 120 Starter Issues???" recently posted.<br /><br />I'm afraid I may have messed up my gears or something on my '94 Force 120. On my starter posting (which is all fixed now YEAH!!!) I mentioned that I turned the flyweel couter clockwise (not knowing it could mess up something). Although the engine and starter work fine, the gears are making a clicking or grinding sound at all speeds - so i quickly re-docked it. Could the flywheel improper rotation be the cause or could debris possibly getting caught up in motor. I'm at a new slip that seems to be a collecting spot for floating debris. help.

Hi Agd<br />No, turning the engine backwards would have no effect on anything but the water pump empeller. I can't imagine floating derbis hurting anything ether unless it was wound up in the prop. You might want to pull your prop and check the shaft. Better look at the gear oil also. Might want to check shift cable adjustment. Did you ever test your alternator (stator)? Are you sure there is nothing rubbing under the fly wheel? How about sound blanket insulation, is that rubbing?

Alcan, many thanks. Took the boat to a reputable mechanic and he looked it over (felt that I was over my head). All is fine. I may have created the problem by lightly shifting to forward and reverse (thought i was being easy on the boat) versus solid shifting. <br /><br />He did recommend an annual Carbon Free treatment by Sierra for Force engines saying that the 2-strokes tend to have a lot of carbon build-up, so I bought a can.

AGD1962,<br /><br />You never shift an outboard nice and easy. Quick sure shifts are the ticket.<br /><br />The "ease in" method has kept many outboard and I/O tecnicians in business.<br /><br />Glad you found out early.

The debaard works miricles for Force engines. Use it at least once a year and that thing will run forever.<br /><br />I like the de-carb by Valtech in a can.

Thanks for the advice. The mechanic also said to be firm on the gear shifting. Good advice!
