Gear noise

I amjust getting used to my first I/O. The engine is very quiet but there is a speed-dependant "whirring" noise from the outdrive. It is not loud and it doesn't really sound malicoius, but I don't really know what they usually sound like. You have to be on it pretty hard and going pretty fast to really hear it. Kind of like an old "3 on the tree" pickup? Can you usually hear "gear noise?"
