Yesterday my motor bogged just a bit, then came back up to rpm. When I got to the idle speed zone I heard a slight Wheerrrrrrr sound coming from the motor only when in gear. Normal sound in neutral, but in gear I get this very slight wheeerrrr sound…..

1986 225 hp Johnson

I am going to drain the gear fluid tonight and see if I can pick up any clues. Any ideas?

Mac

Re: Gear noise.

Check the gearlube. See what comes out. Check your propnut for tightness as well. And give it a spin with the motor tilted up. If the sound is there, it could be the forward gear bearing.

Re: Gear noise.

Well guess what came out when I opened the lower plug?………….

Black salt water, sprinkled with lots of metal specks and a generous helping of shards stuck to the magnetic plug. I ran a quart of gear oil through it and spun the prop a bit and drained it again. More shavings and other ulgyness…

I filled up the case and lowered the boat back down and immediately noticed the engine was shifting much better. So I figured that I’d see if I got lucky this time. Ran the boat up on plane and the motor started bogging down. Bad news. Tried again and noticed that I lost about ½ the water flow to the tell tail. Must have gotten real hot down there!

So now I think it is time to rebuild or replace the unit. What are the pros and cons of doing this rebuild with the amount of shavings I found? If I decide to buy a used one how do I identify the correct unit?

Thanks
Mac

Re: Gear noise.

With the symtom's you discribe, I would say you have a gear set breaking up. Those shavings you see are very hard particle's, ( above file hard ). They have been run through every moving component. That means gears, and bearings. You will have to replace them all, or take a chance, and replace them all again. Generaly! you are looking at a total rebuild here, or find a used replacement.

Re: Gear noise.

hello
the nice thing about your jonnyrude case is that it does not require a truck load of special tooling to rebuild. have the new pinion gear shimmed by a dealer with the correct tool and maybe have them change the prop and drive shaft seals for you. the only bearings that need a special tool ,if replacement is nessasary, is the lower drive shaft bearing, upper bearing and propshaft bearng. carefully inspect the rollers in the upper driveshaft bearing housing and the prop shaft bearing carrier. check all the torrington bearings for damage. be aware that about 17 rollers will fall out when you withdraw the drive shaft. find them all :) :) .
the rest of the case is straight forward.
good luck and keep posting

Re: Gear noise.

What should this cost to rebuld by a qualified shop vs something from a salvage yard? If I am going to pay for part of the job, I'd like to have them do the whole job in case of trubble later.

Mac

Re: Gear noise.

If you get one from the salvage yard you will still want to change the water pump and maybe the seals. After you install it run it for 30 minutes or so and then drain the lower unit and relube. Look for gunk and shiny stuff.
