When i changed my gear oil on the weekend i noticed the old oil was very dark grey in color.
I don't think there is water getting in, because the oil was not milky or brown.

Would this be normal or is this a sign of excessive wear?

i usually only change the lube once a year.

Thanks

When you say the oil is gray, could it also be discribed as a silvery color. How did the drain plug with the magnetic tip look like , if it has one? This color oil could be a sign of wear, somewhere in the gearcase.

This is the first oil change since i had the seals redone last january. It was more grey than silver
and did not appear to have metal filings in it.

what would i be looking for on the drain plug?

If it has a magnetic tipped drain plug, There will be fine metalic whiskers on it. This is normal! If it has metalic particles, that would be a sign that something is coming apart.

Some of the newer synthetic oils that I have seen come out as dark grey. If you still have the old oil and given it has sat for awhile try pouring it out slowly and look for heavy residue in bottom of container. When things start to wear or chew up you normaly see a definate silver light grey color.

Nice to see someone changing his oil!

Some of the motors I see, the owners don't know what oil is - and amazingly, they still run.

Sounds like you've got nothing to worry about. If it was silvery, with a kind of dull sparkle to it (that's about as near a description as I can think of), or milky-coloured - then you've got future problems.

Changeing oil depends on use, once a season in most cases. Best done in the fall, or before freezing weather.
