I bought a boat with a 25HP 1977 Evinrude last week from a friend. In my excitement to get out on the water I didn't check the lower unit oil, turns out it was mostly empty. So after running for a few minutes I heard a noise, throttled back, and after that the prop wouldn't turn with the engine. Turns out all the teeth were missing off the pinion gear. Today I noticed that the gear oil he gave me was Type C, for hydraulic shift. The motor is manual shift. Could his using this oil for a few years hurt the engine, and should I get rid of it? Or is it fine to keep using (now have the lower unit of a 72)?

get rid of it. always change the washer on the fill & vent plugs when ever you remove them. #1 cause of water intrusion. they're cheap put some on the shelf, and remember where they are. you need 80/90 outboard motor lower unit oil. walmart carries it in the oil section.

The wrong gearlube didn't cause the problem, not enough gearlube did. 25Hp isn't enough to make much difference, not all that much strain. 250Hp certainly would. But get the right stuff anyhow. It's not expensive and they don't need a lot.

OK, thanks. Anyone know if this stuff is legal to ship? I have around 20 tubes of it, I'm sure someone can use it.

Don't know about the shipping legality but I'm sure it gets done all the time. Somebody with the electric shift would be glad to get it.

However, having said all that, in the days of OMC type C, it was recommended for ALL OMC outboards. It was replaced with OMC Premium Blend which was also used in ALL their motors. No need to get rid of it. Premium Blend was then replaced by Hi-Vis because the high horsepower motors needed a better lube, but they had to keep making Premium Blend for the electric shifts. I believe it was type C that I was told by an insider at Evinrude that it had a whale oil addative in it. That's why they had to quit making it and replaced it with Premium Blend. Now there is something you won't learn about every day, huh?
