Got some gear oil from Walmart a while back...was in the marine section but after a closer look it doesn't specify for marine use on the bottle. Super Tech SAE 75W-90, GL-5. Is this ok or should I use something else?

Thanks,
Joe

Well, Joe, I know a few fellows who save some money by buying automotive rear end oil. The marine grade does have more emulsifiers in it since lower units are in water and more likely to take on some than an auto rear end.

As long as the lower unit is not leaking and taking in water, the automotive stuff will work fine. However, It would be best to change it every season to check for water. The choice is yours

Thanks, much appreciated. It looked pretty gray with a little milkiness when I changed it, so I may be getting some water intrusion. I think I'll check on it after a trip and see what it looks like, change to the "marine" stuff as a precaution if need be.

Your motor calls for OMC HiVis. Why would you want to use some other off-brand stuff, knowing that you have to waste time checking it frequently? Pay the extra $2 and run all Summer worry free.

Well it's more than a couple bucks for me since it's not in my local stores and I have to get it shipped, but you're right. I went ahead and ordered some for peace of mind.

Thanks,
Joe

I've been running the Wal-Mart stuff for years and had no issues. Pep-Boys stocks a Castrol Full Synthetic if you want to upgrade a bit.
