Hello to all, well the topic headline says it all. I went to winterize my boat today and when I lowered the trim down gear oil started dripping out of the propeller. Wasn't a lot just kind of dribbled out for a minute or so. Is this normal? I looked up in there and it kind of looks a little messy in there. Is there a seal that I need to change or again is this normal? Well any help would be great. Thanks 1989 Baja Islander 3.0 Mercruiser, Bravo one Gen one outdrive

Very likely it is unburnt fuel.It probably smells gassy. If its leaking gear oil there will be water in the gear case turning the oil to a coffee with cream color.
Gear oil has that distinct gear oil smell.

I forgot to mention that part. When I went to drain it to change it a bunch of water came out of the drain hole. Then some of the milky fluid and then finally the clean stuff came out. I know that is part of winterizing it and I'm also glad I did it. Its going to be getting cold here over the next couple of weeks. Thanks

Ayuh,.... Yer gonna have to pull the drive, 'n test it to see where it's leakin',.....

Lower the drive, shift to forward, then pull the 6 nuts, 'n the trim ram ends,...
The drive weighs 'bout 80 lbs. so be ready for it,....

Thanks, I just finished winterizing it today and got it all tarped up. That will be a spring project when I dewinterize it.

Just wanted to touch base on this topic that I started. It's spring now and it is still going to be a bit before I get my boat out but I want to get this issue that I have fixed. I did a pressure test on it after viewing some videos. As I was doing this I was hearing air come out from behind the propeller. So I'm guessing an hoping it is just that seal. Do I need to still take off the lower unit or can I just remove the propeller? Thanks for the input on this. I have a manual that I have been kind of looking at but haven't looked at that seal section yet.

Ayuh,.... The cavity behind the prop, goes all the way to the upper unit of the outdrive, 'n sound travels well in such cases,...

You can try takin' Just the prop off, 'n pressurizin' again, but ya say ya filled it with oil, right,..??
Is there a puddle of oil under it from sittin' all winter,..??
It's gotta be drained to pressure test,...

Bottom line, the drive oughta be pulled to fix it, as well as servicin' the rest of the things that should be done Every year, but aren't,...

I did drain it to do the test. After posting earlier I thought about the sound traveling. Secondly I did not notice any fluid on the ground. About as much came out that I put in several months ago.
