So I found a big ole glob of oil on the shop floor right under my prop last night about an hour or so after fishing with the kids. I noticed that there was no water coming out of the telltale while we were out fishing so we cut the trip short. I just checked the tube and found it to be plugged so hopefully that solves that problem. I deceided to check the oil in the gear box and not a drop came out  I added some oil and within a few seconds oil started coming out from around the prop and out the water inlet screen. the question is whats my next step? the Serial # of the motor is 7041731 it's a 50 hp mercury thunderbolt. Any feedback would be great!

Check if water in gear oil.Loosen vent screw then fill screw so it will flow.If water present it will come out first.
Check fill screw magnet for metal shavings.light shavings is normal, excessive or even chunky bits is not good.Rebuild time.
A few main areas that can leak, yours sounds like prop shaft seal.

there was no oil in the gear case when I removed the plugs. and when I filled it there was a little bit of water that came out. but the oil came out of the prop area so fast, it was hard to tell. no shavings on the fill plug.

your lower seals are bad there are two of them your manual will show you how. but if there is any damage to the shaft it's going to cost you. there is a great you-tube on how to replace seals in mercury it's will cover most size motor
