Ayuh,...

Merc. would recommend their Hi-preformance gear oil....It's a Syn-oil....

I use Mobil 1, 75W-90....Also a Syn-oil, only without the pretty colored dye...

One other thing that is in the Hi Performance Merc gear lube, is additives that cause the oil and water to mix instead of seperating.

The merc oil is the very best. But it ain't cheap, but then again your not using gallons and gallons of it.

Me in a new drive thats what i would use.

Ayuh,... Not to be argumentative,...
But,...
A couple years ago, I had a Water in the drive issue....
I couldn't believe the amount of water that mixed into the Mobil 1,...
The Amazing part of it was,...
No matter How much water was injusted, the lube looked worse than Snot, but was still Soo Super Slippery...
My personal experince leads me Not to believe that the Merc. oil is Any better,....
Other than the pretty colored dye makes itsomewhat easier to see the water....
That 1 month long issue convinced Myself.....

Re: Gear oil for a 3.0 lt

Some syn. gear lubes will mix while running, but seperate after setting for a day. The Merc gear lube gets milky like engine oil and stays that way and will never seperate back out.
The GL5 Synthetic Volvo sells will allow water to come out of suspention. Which I really didn't like. So, in my Volvo DP, I used Merc Hi performance. I kept my boat in the water for 5 to 6 months at a time, so I didn't want the lower gears to be setting there in pure water if I had a leak.
Just a personal choice.
