gear oil in bilge

There is what seem and smells like gear oil in the engine bilge. I have a merc 305 chev engine can gear oil some how make it's way into the bilge ?

Year and model of drive and engine would be handy for ID purposes.<br />You problem sounds like you have gear lube in your ujoint bellows, from there it leaks into the engine compartment through the gimbal bearing.<br />If the gear lube is leaking out of the drive, what is lubricating those gears and bearings?????<br />Time to pull the drive and find the problems before you loose the drive completely.

If you're absolutley sure it's gear oil, then there are only 2 ways it can get into the bilge. First is through the front seal in the top gearbox. Second is if you have an oil lube monitor bottle mounted on the inside of the transom and that, or the hose, is leaking.<br /><br />Chris.............
