I have a 3.0 liter mercuriser with an alph one drive. I noticed gear oil in the bilge area this weekend and the resivor was empty(1995). I filled the rsivor back up started it and could not find the leak. We took it out on the lake and ran it and watched it the best we could still can not tell where it is comming from. It's not leaking on the outside of the outdrive just the inside.

James

i would check the drive level at the vent on the upper to be sure its really full many drives get wiped out from a low upper

the tank cap keeps pressure in the tank and the line to the drive may only leak when its hot

you may need to pull the drive to see were the oils is going and pressure test it because it's going somewere and if left that way it will have a bad ending

tommays

How much oil is in the bilge??Was is the same amount that was in the res??? Could be yoke seal on drive and the bellows is full of oil and some is coming in through the gimbal. It would have to be a lot of oil to do this. The obvious is to keep an eye on the res and line and cap. Many of the plastic res. had stress cracks on the bottom where the nipple is tightened on.Rub your fingers on the bottom of the res and see if there is any oil there.Charlie

I will check the vent on the upper. I don't think the res. is leaking because the alt. is directly under it and it is not covered in oil. There is no oil on the line running from the res. to the out drive. As bad as I hate to I'm going to have to pull the lower unit??? It lost oil while we were running but we could not tell from where.
