Hi, I just bought a 2001 6 hp 2 stroke. I transported it lying on its back in my car and when i hung it on my stand a bunch of fresh gear oil came out of the two holes in the lower unit above the fill plug. Looks like 2 vent holes. Quite a lot of oil came out of there. I stuck it in a barrel and ran it. It shifts fine into forward, neutral and reverse. After taking it out of the barrel more gear oil came out of those holes. (the holes are about the same height as the cavitation plate.). Now the gear oil coming out was milky as it mixed with waster somewhere. I also noticed this same milkiness coming out from the behind the prop (the prop feels loose on its hub by the way), I haven't investigated that yet. I pulled the drain and fill scres out and all the fluid drained out was milky colored. I don't know if it is related but the water pump only pumped sporadically. I attached a picture of the outboard so you guys can see how clean this thing is. Motor ran fine though. Anyone have any ideas for me would be appreciated. Thanks

I replaced a lot of seals for Mercury outboards. Mostly the prop shaft seals are bad but it looks like your drive shaft seals are gone. The seals are placed below the water pump housing. You can buy complete seal kits for 30-40 dollars. So you can replace al the bad seals. Not to difficult but takes some time. For removal of the prop shaft bearing carrier you need the special tool. Be aware that the thread of that carrier is left handed.

Do I need to mess with preloads and gear tooth contact (shims etc) ? Where can I get the tool to acess the prop shaft seal. I noticed the prop seems to have more than usual play. Is this an indicator of anything?
