Re: gear oil leak

You did not tell us what motor you have but if you are sure it is gear oil you can replace just the prop shaft seal(s).

You have 2 seals, back to back, in the bearing housing. I think you will have to pull the bearing housing to change the seals, make sure to replace the sealing o-rings also.

so this isnt a quick easy job of just taking the prop off and throwing a seal on

I don't think so, do you have a manual on your engine? It would give you step by step instructions to replace the seals.
I am not able to get to a manual at this time, but I am sure an expert will come along and confirm the process.

You really need to get a manual. Even of you do not do the work yourself, at least you can understand what a Marine Tech tells you about your motor issues and you will be able to tell if he is blowing smoke or not...

In this case, not as easy as just pulling prop and changing seals. The outer end of the shaft housing (bearing assmbly) has ot come out... Not difficult to do if you have a manual and an exploded parts view diagram...

Re: gear oil leak

If it is milky then it has gotten some water in it and needs to be changed anyway..

Re: gear oil leak

Have you pulled the drain screw and checked the gear oil? If the oil is not milkey and is full, I would think what you are seeing is unburnt gas/oil mixture which is not uncommon on a 2 cycle outboard.
Always best to check the easy things first.

Re: gear oil leak

A trick I learned that usually works to make the work short.

Remove prop
Drill small hole in seal flange. Caution stay away from aluminum casing.
Use screw in slide hammer to POP the seal out. Drill the second and do the same.
Use a piece of pipe of proper diameter to tap new seals in place.

I have sucessfully resealed several lower units/outdrives without pulling the assembly.

If you have a NAPA store close they will be able to get them for you.
