Re: gear oil leaking

Is this a one piece or two peace gearcase? Two piece will require you to disassemble the two parts. The seal is located in the upper part of the gearcase. A one piece gearcase the seal is located on the gearcase cover that the water pump gasket sits on

There is a seal right where the rod enters the gearcase. Tou probably don't see it because it is dirty. Clean the area around the shift rod and you will see the seal with the metal side up. Before you tear it out, try taking a 1/4 inch drive socket about 7/16 size. Slip it over the rod with the square drive hole down. Now take something long to slop over the rod and lightly tap the socket down to compress the seal a little more. Do it until the rod has a drag on it when moved but does not stick. This MAY re-seat the seal and stop the leak.
If it does not, this seal was used on almost all of the 3 and 4 cylinder Chrysler and Force engines before they were bought by Merc. So, it should still be available. Costs about 7 bucks. The approved method for removing the old seal is to remove the shift rod and screw in a 5/16 lag screw, then pull out the seal. The new one is pressed in as above--rubber side down, metal side up.
