I picked up some gear oil for my 1976 15Hp motor and 1961 5.5Hp motor. The oil says it is for "all outboard gear oil applications requiring SAE 80, SAE 85, SAE 90 and OMC type C".

I have heard that one should not use regular oil for a LU specifying type C oil, but can one use an oil that works for type C in a non electric shift lower unit like mine. I am not even sure what type C is. It appears the label on the oil says I can but I thought I would ask here first.

You cannot use the multi purpose in an electric shift where Type C is required. But you can use type C in motors where other stuff is called for. In other words, you are good to go with what you bought and intend to put it in.
