Gear oil reservoir addition

I have an old mercruiser 165. A marine mechanic suggested that adding a reservoir inside the hull of the boat connected to the top fill plug of the outdrive would be a good idea. Making a clear reservoir would allow me to see a fill line so i'd always know if the drive was "making" or losing gear oil and what condition it appeared to be in. Is this good advice? Seems logical to me except that you would have a couple connection failure points that if they did fail would be pretty bad. Just looking for opinions.

If this is on a boat that stays in the water all summer, or for long periods of time, yes, that would be a good idea. For a trailer boat, that gets pulled out of the water for get it.
Simply checking the gear lube will work, ant it's a ell of a lot cheaper. Of course you do need to know how to operate a screwdriver.

.

I have one on a trailer boat and was thinking of re-positioning it. If I have it, would you suggest removing it, or just not worth the extra cost to add it. Do they add problems?
