I want to change the gear oil, but my question is do I have to have a pump to change the oil? Do you have to pump it in the bottom hole and make it come out thr top hole? any responce is great thanks

Using a pump is the easy way and yes you fill from the bottom hole. I have filled lower units in the past by squeezing the lube out of a tube or soft sided bottle too. Although it is messy it does work. You want to fill the gear case until the oil comes out of the top hole.

Yeah man, I bought a $3.00 syphon tube to pump my gear oil in, but what a pain. For $7 from walmart you cant go wrong man. Even with the pump it is a messy job......

A pump is one of the greatest investments you can ever make. If you squeeze it in the bottom it'll be a big mess... You can try dripping it in the top but it will take hours/days for the air to bubble out...

I use a quart bottle with the Little tip, fill till it comes out the top, put in vent (top) plug, pull out bottle tip from bottom hole and put in that plug. Rebuilding your own lower unit and having it not leak water.... Priceless

Yes you always want to fill from the bottom hole until it comes out the top. Than put the top plug in and quickly put in the bottom. I have a friend who destroyed his lower unit filling from the top. As far as to pump or not it really depends on the motor. On my old 9hp the lower unit was small and I just got one of the soft tubes shoved the end in the hole and squeezed and it worked really well. I just changed the oil in my new 135hp for the first time and since it is a much larger lower end (took a full quart) I spent about $15 on a pump. It screwed right onto the bottle and than the other end of the tube screwed right into the motor and it worked great. So long story short (to late lol) if you have a small motor you can get away without a pump but since they can be had for cheep they are well worth the money for a larger motor.

A pump is well worth the small amount of money you will pay for it. I got mine at gander mountain but chances are you can pick one up anywhere you buy your gear oil.

Also, replace the seals on the screws or it'll all be for nothing.
