Gear problem

I have 160 merc. and it will no longer go into gear. Just before it crapped out there was a burning smell and then it just wouldnt go into gear. Any ideas on what it could be or what i can check . Thanks

I would also bet you have an overheat problem if you keep it running as well.
Sounds like the coupler gave up on you

So How do I check if its the coupler and how do I go about changing it. Thanks

Just look at the rubber part of the coupler, wipe the grease off and see if the rubber looks smooth, if it's all tore up the coupler is bad.
To replace it you have to pull the outdrive, then the engine to access it.

I pulled the motor...the floor holding the front motor mounts had sucnk throwing everything out of wack.......NOw how do I go about removing the engine coupler? it looks in rough shape.

I would worry about how your going to repiar the rot before you go any futher on the repiar :(

The floor is alrerady fixed, cut out all the rot put in big block of would and more support then some new plywood and then re fiberglassed it all its plenty strong now. I just dont know how to remove the engine coupler.

OK :)

Just remove the bellhouseing from the back of the motor and its bolted to the flywheel

Did you poke around the transom the rot tends to spread there and any flex will eat the coupling again
