Gear ratio question

I did try to search this, but didn't find what I was looking for. Sorry if this has been asked before and I couldn't find it. I have a 1974 Sea Ray 190, with the 188hp mercruiser, 302 Ford, with the 888 stern drive. I am going to need a lower unit and is the gear ratio something I need to be wary of. My gear ratio is 1.5 to 1. Is this in the upper, or do I need a lower that is that ratio? Or will any Alpha 1, Gen 1, M, MR unit work? Thanks for any help.

Any MC1, R, MR or Alpha One lower will work. You are correct in that the overall ratio is determined by the upper box. There was a lower with a different ration, 2.2:1 (I think) but they were rare.
