Gear Ratios - Confused

In the process of refinishing my AQ280 -DP/PT. I'm confused as to the proper gear ratio of the upper gear unit. The tag is in pretty bad shape, but it appears to be a 1.61:1 ratio. From my reading of this forum, I've been led to believe that the 1.61:1 is for a V-8 application. I am running a '98 Volvo Penta 5.7 Gi.

But when I refer to the workshop manual, it states the AQ280-DP/PT was only available in 1.95 or 2.30.

Should I be concerned and do I need to change the gear unit to a 1.95?

Probably not. The top unit ratio is the same for either DP or SP. The lower DP unit has another gear reduction to where putting a DP lower unit on changes the 1.6 to 1.95. The SP lower unit is 1:1 regarding gears.

Thanks, Mac. I was hoping not to have to spend a fist full of cash for another gearcase.

To find out the ratio for positive take off the prop and the ring anode behind it. Stamped on the bearing carrier you will find the gear ratio.

PatinIdaho, I will check the lower unit stamping tonight. The unit is already prepped for paint, so the anode is already off.

Thanks for the help!!
