Gear ratios.. Could someone explain?

Upon looking for a new drive, I see ads with gear ratios.<br /><br />What ratio do I need? I have no idea what my original drive's gear ratio is.<br /><br />I have a 1976 MC-1, 233 (351W Ford V8)<br /><br />This is in a 26 ft. fishing boat.<br /><br />I've found a few drives, but they are off a V6 with a ratio of 1.84. wont work very well the original should have been a 1.32 but a 1.5 would work prety good maybe a little better than original any lower would over rev the engine
