I think you should clarify your post a little better. I can't make heads or tails out of it.

Did you have all the gears out? When you put it back together you can only get two gears.Neutral and just one other,It could be part # 13 and 14 not in the right way.
With the lower off and pushing and pulling on the shift rod you should get all 3 positions if you dont something is put together wrong.Screwing the shift rod in and out wont help.

Lower unit has not been divided into pieces.
I took it in and replaced the gasket, it is number 23 on the image.
So I saved it inside the house in winter, but the gear has apparently come out of position?

What I think happened is when you removed part 55 part 13 and 14 fell out of place, remove part 45 again. turn the lower unit upside down and get part 13 and 14 out,Fit them together and screw them on to part 55 then put them down into the lower and make sure part 13 fits on part 15 then put part 45 with the new gasket back on. it should then work.
Follow me??

I thought you removed it? Well try this push the shift rod down and spin the prop at the same time,Does it go down? after that pull it up while spinning the prop.
OK we know it is suppose to have 3 positions Down,Midway and up,Midway the prop should spin free does it? from midway can the shaft go down? Can it go up?
I still think part 13 and 15 have something to do with it.But try what I asked and tell me which way you can get the shift rod to move.
