Rigging any type switch would work as long as the voltage being applied is as follows:

Neutral = 12v to green wire only.
Reverse = 12v to both Green & Blue wire.
Forward = No voltage applied.

The drawback would be that it would be possible to shift from forward to reverse at full throttle, which in my opinion is going to cause quite a lot of damage.

you should start looking for a evenrude controller if you can't find a johnson 2nd hand..

the evinrude has buttons you push..

I made a switch for mine (72 Johnson) from a power windows switch.. which I adapted with a few other bits to fit exactly where the old one was..

worked great but it was fiddly to setup at first.. but use the roller from the old stitch and attach it to the top of the power window switch... you can get it to work...

rgds

frank

I have had the same problem and installed a 3 position off-on-on push-pull light switch on the dash and control it through that. If it ever goes bad, it's $4 and easy to find and replace.
Has worked great for me for years.

Jim
