Gear Selection Problems

Hi , I have just purchased Spirit V180 speedboat with a Evinrude 225 V6 VRO outboard.<br />I'm having trouble engaging forward / reverse gear. Can adjust to get one of the gears but not both? Is there a specific control gear for this type of engine? It is fitted with an OMC gear shift.

Most likely the shift cable has stretched. Same thing just happened to my sons boat. Changed the cables and away he went.<br /><br />This is assuming it shifts fine by hand with the cable disconnected.
