Re: gear sets...
Once again, experience proves that water is an insufficient lubricant for this application.
what I learned the hard way this time btw, is that the alpha one ss upper has a little different nose - it's slightly narrower at the end, is stepped with no taper and is a little longer longer (over 1/8 inch). It either needs a slightly different front seal or at least careful attention to be sure the seal remains in place when attaching the drive. I apparently boogered up the seal between the drive and gimbal housing when putting the drive on and got water in the bellows - then of course it leaked into the upper drive made a milk shake out of the gear lube in the upper and carnage ensued. The front bearing assembly won't even turn by hand. At least the housing is still usable and the lower unit with the completely obsolete verticle shaft is in good shape. I'll just put the entire guts from the 1.5 upper in it for now... (set preload, gear positions and backlash, disassemble and clean the lower, etc.). The shorter cle gearcase runs a solid 6-8 mph faster, handles better and yields a good bit better fuel economy than the standard drives do on my boat.
