My engine was working first class no problems when engaging forward or reverse, changed the throttle and shift cables, (which are a bit to long) took it to water to test but would not go into reverse, no noises or anything, came back home and turned knurled adjustment nut on cable 3 complete turns just enough to allow it to go into reverse, it engages when on muffs, but wonder if I have done correct thing, still waiting for my new manual! any advise please, thank you, J B D

Disconect the cable....Then shift by hand into reverse.

Now...Is your cable even close to where it should be....If not....... keep on turnin.

If it dosent go into forward now..then change the clamping on the cable.....Other words equalise the position of cable....so its travel will engage both.

When it left the factory...it worked...something has changed....now change it back to where it was when it left the factory......Grin!

Good luck!

Re: gear shift on Evinrude 40hp1984 BE40ELCR

thanks for help, when you say adjust the clamping of the cable, I imagine you mean inside OMC CONTROL BOX which I have not looked inside yet? the cables are far to long and I notice that it does not give WOT in forward, which I suppose is because it needs the throw equal to get movement forward and in reverse, I just turned the adjuster on shift cable at engine untill it engaged reverse! noted by turning the prop and then running on muffs, so will disconnect in reverse and check the travel, readjust and check again, also in forward, have manual(wrong one came)from 1991 on (mine is 1984) and is doesn't appear to show how to adjust shift cable?thank you for help JBD
