Gear Shifting Problems

So I finally got the boat out in the water and she was running great (even did well slowly towing someone for a half hour!!), but it was not all fun and games. When I got back to the dock, I shifted into neutral and then into reverse and it sounded like it did not shift well. This was confirmed when I went to shift it back into neutral it would not physically let me shift the throttle from reverse back to netural. Ultimately, I shut off the boat and it easily shifted back into netural. I then restarted the boat and it went back into forward and I was able to get out of the water.

Question:

Could someone tell me why that when the boat was running it will not shift from forward to neutral to reverse and vice versa? Mercuriser Alpha One 175 hp, 262 CID, 4.3 L.

Re: Gear Shifting Problems

Your shift interrupter swich is malfunctioning ......
Have you lubed the pivot points on the shift plate?.....
You will need to get a DVM & do some testing.....
How do the wire connections look?......

Re: Gear Shifting Problems

May be the shift interrupt switch is defective or the wiring, When you try to bring it out of gear, the shift interrupt switch should kill the ignition for a split second to release pressure on the shift dogs so they will release.

Click here and start on page 1C-38 for troublshooting the shift system.
