I am reassembling a Merc Alpha upper unit and have come across an issue with what I am reading in the manual. The manual states to tighten the nut on the gear yoke until you start to feel the drag on the bearing. Then turn the nut 2 x 360 then 1/3 turn. At this point set the preload with a torque wrench to spec. Depending on new or the original bearings and shims. "SELOC Manual page 10-30 to 10-31. Steps 25 and 26.
My problem is that when I turn the nut down til I feel drag on the bearing I can only turn the nut not even half turn.
Why is this ? Your help is very appreciated.

When in doubt go back to the beginning.

Re: Gear Yoke bearing preload help

Thank you Don. I downloaded the manual and it is just like the seloc. Anyway I think what the problem is that I never separated the bearings and spacers. I had just removed the gear and bearings as a unit and replaced a seal. Is this why when I put the nut on and tighten til I feel load on the bearing that I am not able to do 2 full revolutions with the nut? Would my preload already be partially present because I never separated the bearings and spacers?

Re: Gear Yoke bearing preload help

you need to re-read the oem manual and first figure out what style bearing/race set you have

one has a spacer, the other does not

the style with the spacer gets torqued to 70 lb/ft and youre done, the other gets torqed until you achieve the specified rolling torque measured with a dial lb/in torque wrench, there is no other way to do this

you also need a new nut and must disaasemble, clean and inspect the bearings before going back together
